Introduction
The poet, linguist, literary critic and German politician, Wilhem von Humboldt, travelled to the Basque Country for the first time in 1799. Two years later, he was able to satisfy the curiosity aroused by that first trip and after travelling around most of the region, taking notes on its language, culture, landscape, customs and institutions, etc., he published a book entitled: The Basques, which has since been translated into many different languages.
This new digital collectable takes a look at what Humboldt wrote about the Basque Country, its people, economic activities, clothing, pastimes, dances and language, information which subsequently spread to many different European centres of study.
Each monthly instalment will deal with a specific town and theme, all illustrated with engravings from the era.
